Chess Returns to Broadway After 40 Years — An Exclusive Comeback!
Revival of the Musical “Chess” Sparks Excitement on Broadway
Nearly four decades after its brief run on Broadway in 1988, the cult musical “Chess” is making a comeback. Despite only 68 performances during its original run, the show gained lasting fame through a soundtrack that features hits by ABBA members.
Tickets went on sale this week, and fans eagerly lined up as early as 3 a.m. outside the Imperial Theatre to secure limited-edition posters signed by stars Lea Michele, Aaron Tveit, and Nicholas Christopher. Only the first 50 purchasers received these exclusive souvenirs, causing a lengthy line down West 45th Street.
Lea Michele, who made her Broadway debut 30 years ago in “Les Misérables,” stars in this new production directed by Michael Mayer. Fans showed their dedication; some even brought Playbills from the original run, while others, including a dedicated fan who slept in their car, came prepared for the event.
The musical, with music and lyrics by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus, and Tim Rice, recounts a Cold War-era chess tournament between two grandmasters. Its soundtrack includes the chart-topping “One Night in Bangkok,” which reached No. 3 in 1985 and was a highlight of the West End production in 1986.
The revival features a revamped book by acclaimed screenwriter Danny Strong, known for “Dope Sick,” “Empire,” and “Game Change,” under the direction of Michael Mayer.
The show’s return has generated buzz across Broadway, with a season full of star-studded appearances—including Michele, James Corden, Neil Patrick Harris, Keanu Reeves, Kristin Chenoweth, and others—indicating a vibrant and starry theater scene this year.
