DC Mayor Bowser Pushes for Indefinite Federal Policing as Trump Emergency Order Nears Expiration

Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser Announces Extension of Federal Cooperation

Mayor Muriel Bowser has authorized local law enforcement to collaborate closely with federal agencies indefinitely, as an emergency order initiated by former President Trump to address crime in the district is nearing its expiration.

On Tuesday, Bowser issued an order requiring police to work with federal counterparts “to the maximum extent allowable by law within the District.” This directive has no set end date and aims to ensure continued federal support in policing efforts.

This order comes three weeks after President Trump deployed troops to help improve safety on the streets and just before federal control over the district’s police force is set to conclude next week after a 30-day period. Bowser emphasized that this move will “provide a pathway forward beyond the Presidential emergency.”

She highlighted the positive results of federal intervention, noting that outreach teams identified 764 individuals experiencing homelessness, including 81 living in tents. Since the surge began, approximately 80 people have been accommodated in local shelters.

Meanwhile, President Trump praised the initiative, asserting, “We don’t have a crime problem in Washington anymore,” and commended Bowser’s cooperation, which he claims has contributed to significantly reducing crime.

Since the federal crackdown, DC has experienced an 87% decrease in carjackings and a 45% decline in overall violent crime. Bowser also reported that the presence of federal forces has included beautification projects like trash collection and graffiti removal, with troops engaging in custodial work around the city.

Additionally, under federal pressure, the DC Metropolitan Police issued a new order allowing officers to inform Immigration authorities about suspected illegal immigrants during traffic stops, further enhancing cooperation measures.
