The first half was tense and cautious, but tensions soared just before halftime. Mascherano became frustrated with the referee for adding extra minutes beyond the four initially indicated, leading to an outburst that earned him a red card.

Despite his ejection, Mascherano continued to communicate tactical instructions to his assistant, Lucas Rodrigues Pagano, during the second half by phone. This unconventional management style appeared effective, as Suarez scored another penalty late in the game, securing Miami’s progression to the semi-finals.

Post-match, assistant Javier Morales explained the reason behind Mascherano’s frustration and ejection, citing dispute over the added injury time: “The referee added four minutes, but we played six. We argued about the time. Javier was upset about the decision, and the red card was a consequence.”
