Rep. Mike Lawler Won’t Run for NY Governor

Rep. Mike Lawler Announces Re-Election Bid, Not a Run for Governor

Congressman Mike Lawler will focus on securing his seat in the House rather than pursuing a gubernatorial campaign this cycle. After suggesting a possible bid for New York governor earlier, Lawler confirmed he will seek re-election to his Hudson Valley district instead.

“I believe the best choice for me, my family, and my constituents is to run for re-election,” Lawler stated on a televised interview. He emphasized his intention to continue representing his district and maintaining the House Republican majority.

Lawler gained prominence among New York Republicans by defeating incumbent Sean Patrick Maloney in 2022. Notably, he was the only Republican from New York re-elected in 2024 in a district that also favored Kamala Harris in the presidential race.

His decision comes after a recent meeting with former President Donald Trump. Lawler remains optimistic about the Republican prospects in New York, citing Democratic internal struggles, including the nomination of Zohran Mamdani for NYC mayor as signs of Democratic disarray.

“Kathy Hochul, Chuck Schumer, and Hakeem Jeffries are nervous about the possibility of a Marxist leading New York City. They see the mounting challenges for Democrats and the country,” Lawler commented.

Meanwhile, speculation about the Republican candidate to challenge Gov. Kathy Hochul continues. Lawler’s withdrawal from a gubernatorial run paves the way for Rep. Elise Stefanik, who has also been considered a potential contender. Stefanik has yet to make a final decision, stating she will announce after this November’s elections.
