Dem Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband lie in state with their beloved dog—Heartbreaking tribute at Minnesota Capitol!

Honoring the Victims of the Minnesota Shooting

In a somber ceremony, Rep. Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark, and their beloved golden retriever Gilbert were laid in state at the Minnesota Capitol. This marks the first time in state history that an animal has received such honors. Their caskets, surrounded by flowers and law enforcement, were displayed in the Capitol rotunda, with Gilbert’s urn positioned between Melissa and Mark.

The three victims were victims of a politically motivated attack at their Brooklyn Park home, near Minneapolis, on June 14. During the shooting, another Democratic lawmaker and his wife were also wounded. Gilbert, who was gravely injured, was euthanized afterward.

Authorities quickly launched an extensive manhunt, resulting in the arrest of 57-year-old Vance Luther Boelter. Prosecutors describe him as a radical extremist, with a list targeting more than 40 officials. Boelter reportedly dressed as a police officer and carried out shootings at the homes of lawmakers, including state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette, who were seriously hurt.

Disturbing evidence showed Boelter wearing a latex mask during the shootings. He was apprehended after a tense pursuit and faces multiple charges, including murder and attempted murder, with the potential for the death penalty if convicted.

Boelter appeared in court wearing an anti-suicide smock and showed signs of deterioration, claiming poor conditions in detention. His defense requested a postponement of his bail hearing to July 3. Despite his appearance, he maintains he is not suicidal.

The tragic events have deeply affected the community and nation, with prominent figures like the President expressing condolences. Vigils and memorial services continue to honor the victims and their families.
