American Dream Remains a Priority for Most Americans

Recent research indicates that the aspiration known as the American Dream continues to resonate strongly with Americans. Nearly 70% of adults believe they are either close to or have already achieved its fundamental milestones.

According to the 2025 American Dream Snapshot, conducted in May, 30% of Americans report their families are living the dream—a slight increase from 29% last year. An additional 39% feel the dream is within their grasp, up from 38%, while 30% view it as out of reach, down from 32% previously.

Owning a home remains a vital part of the American Dream for over half of Americans.

Among the core values of the American Dream, “freedom of choice in how to live” was prioritized by 83% of respondents, followed by a strong family life at 80%, and the ability to retire comfortably at 72%.

Homeownership continues to be a key element for 52%, while 45% emphasize a successful career, and 34% value contributing meaningfully to society. Interestingly, wealth ranks lowest, with only 15% considering it necessary—down from 19% last year.

Gonzalo Schwartz, CEO of the Archbridge Institute, stated that optimism fuels the American Dream and highlights the country’s enduring spirit as it approaches its 250th year.

Fostering family connections remains a significant aspect of achieving the American Dream for many.

Furthermore, 14% of those surveyed have made tangible progress—starting a business, having children, or purchasing a home—showing ongoing movement toward common milestones.

Encouragingly, 66% of respondents believe most Americans still trust in the American Dream, reflecting a growing faith compared to last year’s 62%.
