Shocking Tragedy: Baylor Freshman Grant Herridge Falls to His Death at Sol Duc Falls!
Texas Teen Dies After Falling from Washington Waterfall During Graduation Trip
A recent graduation celebration turned tragic when a 19-year-old from Texas fell to his death at Olympic National Park in Washington. Grant Herridge, a student at Vanguard College Preparatory in Waco, was exploring the Sol Duc Falls area on June 8 when he slipped on the rocky terrain at the top of a waterfall and fell approximately 50 feet into the pool below.
Witnesses reported that Herridge resurfaced briefly at the bottom of the falls before submerging again. Search and rescue teams responded swiftly but faced challenging conditions due to the high water flow caused by recent warm temperatures and rapid snowmelt. Herridge’s body was recovered the following day, found submerged and lodged between the two falls.
The young adventurer was remembered as a spirited outdoor enthusiast. His father, Brad Herridge, a pastor, shared a heartfelt message on social media, expressing how Grant loved hiking in the wilderness. “He was doing what he loved,” Brad wrote, “and he lived life to the fullest.”
Grant’s aspiration to attend Baylor University was lifelong, inspired by his parents who are alumni of the institution. The university honored him with a memorial service and expressed their sorrow, acknowledging his bright future as part of the Class of 2029.
In memory of Grant, a scholarship named the “Grant Herridge Memorial Scholarship at Baylor University” was established, aiming to continue his legacy and inspire others to live life boldly.
Recovery efforts remain ongoing, with officials prioritizing safety amid the dangerous conditions in the canyon. They have indicated that rescue operations will resume when it is safe to do so.
