Real Madrid chiefs’ shocking response to Xabi Alonso’s daring hijack attempt on Arsenal’s Zubimendi!
How Real Madrid Officials Reacted to Xabi Alonso’s Request to Sign Martin Zubimendi
Recent reports have revealed the reactions within Real Madrid regarding Xabi Alonso’s attempt to acquire midfielder Martin Zubimendi. Alonso, in his first meeting with Madrid’s sporting directors, urged the club to sign the Spanish international, who is also a target for Arsenal.
Arsenal has been considered the front-runner for Zubimendi, with prior negotiations suggesting a near-complete deal valued at around £51 million. However, Real Sociedad preferred to keep him until the end of the season. This month, Madrid reportedly made contact with Zubimendi’s representatives to explore a potential hijack of the transfer.
The Madrid-based newspaper Marca reported that Alonso personally recommended Zubimendi to the club’s decision-makers, emphasizing his desire to revamp Madrid’s midfield. Interestingly, Alonso previously coached Zubimendi at Real Sociedad’s B-team and has publicly praised the midfielder, calling him his idol. Despite Alonso’s push, Madrid’s sporting directors allegedly told him that their current midfielders are sufficient to meet the team’s needs.
Following Alonso’s appointment as Madrid’s boss, the team faced a challenging start in the Club World Cup, drawing 1-1 with Al-Hilal. Madrid’s recent struggles, including a missed winning opportunity via a stoppage-time penalty, have heightened interest in strengthening the squad.
Although Madrid has expressed admiration for Zubimendi, they deny actively pursuing him at this stage. Meanwhile, Arsenal seems confident that their deal with Zubimendi is on track, with the player expected to join Mikel Arteta’s squad for pre-season training. The finalization of the transfer has been delayed, reportedly to allow Real Sociedad to confirm the deal financially in July.
