American Dream Remains a Priority for Most Americans
Recent research indicates that the aspiration known as the American Dream continues to resonate strongly with Americans. Nearly 70% of adults believe they are either close to or have already achieved its fundamental milestones.
According to the 2025 American Dream Snapshot, conducted in May, 30% of Americans report their families are living the dream—a slight increase from 29% last year. An additional 39% feel the dream is within their grasp, up from 38%, while 30% view it as out of reach, down from 32% previously.
Among the core values of the American Dream, “freedom of choice in how to live” was prioritized by 83% of respondents, followed by a strong family life at 80%, and the ability to retire comfortably at 72%.
Homeownership continues to be a key element for 52%, while 45% emphasize a successful career, and 34% value contributing meaningfully to society. Interestingly, wealth ranks lowest, with only 15% considering it necessary—down from 19% last year.
Gonzalo Schwartz, CEO of the Archbridge Institute, stated that optimism fuels the American Dream and highlights the country’s enduring spirit as it approaches its 250th year.
Furthermore, 14% of those surveyed have made tangible progress—starting a business, having children, or purchasing a home—showing ongoing movement toward common milestones.
Encouragingly, 66% of respondents believe most Americans still trust in the American Dream, reflecting a growing faith compared to last year’s 62%.
