Delap was given a rare start after Nicolas Jackson was sent off in Chelsea’s previous match against Flamengo, which resulted in Jackson receiving a two-match ban. The red card was issued for a studs-up challenge, deemed worthy of a two-match suspension by FIFA, exceeding the standard one-match punishment for such tackles.

Discussing the incident, Delap remarked on the importance of playing aggressively and on the front foot, emphasizing that such situations are part of football. Jackson later apologized for his foul, which occurred just four minutes after coming on as a substitute.
