Grandpa Flew 8,000 Miles for Graduation—Then Vanished!

Missing in Alabama: The Disappearance of Reuben Waithaka

Reuben Waithaka went missing on May 15. His whereabouts remain a mystery.

Reuben Waithaka traveled from Kenya to Alabama to witness his grandson’s high school graduation, bringing heartfelt gifts and hoping to celebrate three generations of their family. Unfortunately, he vanished without a trace just a day after arriving in the U.S.

The morning after landing in Calera, Alabama, Waithaka was seen leaving his son’s home at 11:08 a.m., dressed neatly in khakis and a checkered shirt. Surveillance footage captured him walking into a nearby gas station roughly half an hour later. He interacted with a store clerk, then entered a restroom, and was never seen again.

Despite extensive searches by local authorities using helicopters, drones, tracking dogs, and infrared cameras, no definitive evidence of his whereabouts has been found. Search efforts continue in the surrounding woodland areas, but progress remains slow, and the mystery persists.

The family is overwhelmed with questions. Could Waithaka have wandered due to undiagnosed dementia or another condition exacerbated by stress? They recall his restless behavior on the flight, and his fall at the airport, which suggested confusion. His daughter, Emily, expressed her fears, speculating he might have fallen asleep outdoors or been lost in unfamiliar territory.

Waithaka’s journey to the U.S. was challenging; he showed signs of agitation during the flight, and he displayed confusion after arriving in Atlanta. He was briefly hospitalized for evaluation, and after returning to Alabama, he stepped outside and vanished. Witnesses reported that he accepted rides from strangers, which family members believe might have taken him farther away from home.

He was last seen near a hunting club, where a witness saw him enter a wooded area. Authorities are investigating the possibility that he was given additional rides, with efforts to locate him ongoing. Flyers and community outreach have been widespread, but so far, no solid clues have emerged.

Waithaka’s wife returned to Kenya shortly after the incident, and his family remains hopeful yet distressed. His grandson, Byron, who graduated days later, fears for his grandfather’s safety but remains hopeful he is alive.

As days pass without answers, the family and local officials continue their search, determined to find Reuben Waithaka and bring him home.
