Stardust Racers at Universal’s Epic Universe Reopens After Fatal Incident
Reopening of Florida’s Epic Universe Roller Coaster After Tragic Incident
The Stardust Racers roller coaster at Florida’s Epic Universe officially reopened on Saturday afternoon, more than two weeks after a fatal accident involving a rider. The ride resumed operations amid new safety protocols and a reported near three-hour wait time.
The attraction, known for its high speed — reaching up to 62 mph and climbing 133 feet — was shut down following the death of Kevin Rodriguez Zavala, 32, who was found unresponsive during the ride on September 17. Zavala, who had spinal cord atrophy and used a wheelchair, sustained multiple blunt force injuries, as determined by a medical examiner.
Eyewitnesses reported a disturbing scene of Zavala slumping over mid-ride, with his family describing the incident as horrific. The family has since hired civil rights attorney Ben Crump, criticizing the park for missing numerous safety warnings and suggesting staff seemed unprepared for the emergency. Investigations revealed Zavala suffered head impacts and lacerations during the ride, during which he was unconscious for most of the time.
Despite the tragedy, park officials, including President and COO Karen Irwin, confirmed that an extensive review of the coaster indicated it was operating normally at the time of the incident. The ride, which reaches speeds of 62 mph, was found to be in proper working order, with staff adhering to safety procedures.
Authorities, including park and external coaster experts, completed a thorough assessment supporting the initial conclusion that the ride was functioning correctly. Zavala’s family maintains that there were overlooked warning signs regarding safety concerns on the coaster.
