Dems Support Virginia AG Nominee Jay Jones Amid Controversial Texts
Controversy Surrounds Virginia Attorney General Candidate Amid Disturbing Texts
The Democratic nominee for Virginia Attorney General, Jay Jones, faces scrutiny after resurfaced messages reveal disturbing and violent language. Despite these revelations, Virginia Democrats maintain their support, asserting that Jones will serve with integrity and accountability. Gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger has refused to call for him to withdraw, even after acknowledging her disgust for his messages.
In 2022, Jones exchanged alarming texts with Republican Delegate Carrie Coyner, including violent fantasies about political opponents. One message from August 8, 2022, read, “Gilbert, hitler, and pol pot,” followed by plans to “give Gilbert two bullets to the head.” Jones also made threatening remarks about the families of his political foes, expressing intentions to attend funerals to desecrate graves and suggesting violence against their children.
Further texts indicate Jones discussed violent scenarios involving the wife of former Virginia House Speaker, Jennifer Gilbert, even contemplating her children’s deaths to sway Gilbert’s views. Coyner responded with concern, urging Jones to cease such talk and expressing that his words were deeply troubling.
Jones initially dismissed the controversy, criticizing his opponent for smears, but later apologized after contacting Gilbert and his family. In a statement, he expressed remorse, stating, “Reading back those words made me sick to my stomach. I am embarrassed, ashamed, and sorry.”
The resurfacing of these messages comes at a tense moment in Virginia politics, where Jones has been leading in polls against incumbent Jason Miyares. Many top Democrats have chosen not to demand his withdrawal, even as the state grapples with ongoing political tensions and violence.
While Spanberger publicly condemned the messages, she stopped short of calling for Jones to step aside, emphasizing the importance of responsible political conduct and denouncing violent language in politics.
