Bellingham’s Tough Return as Madrid Loses Derby Despite Body Transformation
Mixed Performance in Return to Real Madrid for Jude Bellingham
Jude Bellingham faced a challenging comeback to the starting lineup as Real Madrid suffered a heavy 5-2 defeat against their fierce rivals, Atletico Madrid. This was his first start since undergoing shoulder surgery in July, which kept him sidelined for the initial weeks of the season.
Despite playing 70 minutes, Bellingham was criticized by fans and media for appearing “not effective” and insufficiently fit for the physicality of the match. The defeat marked Madrid’s worst derby loss in 75 years, only the fourth time they’ve conceded five goals to Atletico — the last being a 6-3 game in 1950.
Previously, Bellingham had bulked up to protect his shoulder, and the club now aims for a leaner, sharper physique to better fit Xabi Alonso’s high-intensity pressing style. His earlier performances after joining Madrid from Dortmund in 2023 were highly impressive, scoring 23 goals with 13 assists in his first season, and maintaining strong numbers in his second.
After dislocating his shoulder during a match last November, Bellingham underwent surgery in London this summer. He shared gratitude for the support, posting on social media: “Missed this and all of you so much. Truly humbled by the support during my recovery. Now, more to come. Hala Madrid!”
Bellingham returned to action earlier this month, participating off the bench against Espanyol and Levante, rejoining the squad after his summer operation. His aim remains to regain the form he displayed after his high-profile move, which saw him net 23 goals and provide 13 assists in his debut season.
