Newcastle Secrets: Osula’s Exit, Wissa Injury Boost, PIF Stadium Payout, Top Vice-Captains & Scouting Summit
Newcastle’s William Osula Stay Secured Amid Transfer Turmoil
Recently, Newcastle United’s ownership, led by their Saudi investors, intervened to prevent William Osula from completing a deadline-day transfer to Eintracht Frankfurt. The deal, valued at approximately £30 million, was near completion, with Osula prepared to leave the Denmark national team camp. Newcastle had secured a buy-back clause and had only signed the forward from Sheffield United a year earlier.
Frankfurt attempted to modify the agreement at the last minute, opting for a loan with an option to buy rather than a permanent transfer. However, Newcastle’s majority owners, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia, instructed the club to cancel the deal, despite the loan fee exceeding £6 million. It is believed PIF viewed the revised terms as more favorable to Frankfurt than to Newcastle.
Currently, there is a sense of relief within Newcastle’s camp that Osula remains at the club—particularly because of Yoane Wissa’s injury. With Wissa sidelined until at least after the international break, Osula has featured in all five Premier League matches so far and scored three goals this season, including a double in the Carabao Cup victory over Bradford City.
His impressive form will likely influence the managerial decision for Sunday’s game against Arsenal—whether to keep Osula in the starting lineup or start club-record signing Nick Woltemade. Regardless, Osula’s confidence is high, and he seems set to make an impact this season.
Compensation for Wissa’s Injury
The club is expected to receive a compensation payout from FIFA through the Club Protection Programme (CPP), which insures clubs against injuries sustained by players during international duty. Wissa suffered a knee injury playing for DR Congo on September 9 and may not return until October 18—if not later. The insurance will cover his wages from October 7 until his return to action.
Stadium Development Funding Plans
While Newcastle is contemplating constructing a new stadium or redeveloping St James’ Park, funding will not come solely from PIF. Instead, the project is likely to be financed through a mix of equity and debt, with PIF possibly sharing the costs alongside partners like the Reuben Brothers. This approach mirrors standard practices for large stadium projects across the Premier League.
Leadership and Training Updates
A leadership vacancy arose following Callum Wilson’s departure, and Newcastle players are set to learn who will be promoted to vice-captain. The decision process involves player votes among the squad. Candidates include Fabian Schar, Joelinton, Nick Pope, and Sandro Tonali, with the final choice announced soon.
Meanwhile, under coach Graeme Jones’ guidance, the team conducted a late-night training session after their victory over Bradford, focusing on recovery and preparation for the upcoming match against Arsenal.
