Chelsea Faces Injury Crisis: Only One Fit Senior Center Back Amid Squad Woes
Chelsea Faces Injury Crisis, With Key Players Out and Limited Defensive Options
Chelsea’s injury problems have deepened, with rising star Cole Palmer now ruled out until after the international break due to a groin injury. Manager Enzo Maresca also confirmed that defender Tosin Adarabioyo and Wesley Fofana will miss the same period because of injuries, leaving the team light on experienced options.
Adarabioyo is sidelined with a calf problem, while Fofana showed concussion symptoms after playing the full match against Lincoln in the Carabao Cup, during which Chelsea’s goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen accidentally struck him in the head. Additionally, Levi Colwill, Liam Delap, and Dario Essugo are already unavailable, and uncertainty remains around Romeo Lavia and Benoit Badiashile’s return to the squad.
Furthermore, Facundo Buonanotte won’t face Brighton, where he could have provided cover for Palmer at the No. 10 position. Several players recently returned from injury or illness, including Josh Acheampong and Joao Pedro, and others like Marc Guiu missed training due to niggles.
Maresca attributes some of the injury woes to Chelsea’s extended run in the Club World Cup, where they secured the title in the United States, with Palmer shining in the final against Paris Saint-Germain. Palmer, who has a lingering groin issue, has decided to rest after discussions with medical staff. The club hopes this rest will help him recover without the need for surgery, aiming for full fitness after the international break.
While Chelsea has been cautious with Palmer, the manager indicated that Axel Disasi is unlikely to be reintroduced into the squad as a central defender, despite their current shortage of options in that position.
This injury crisis could significantly impact Chelsea’s upcoming fixtures against Brighton, Liverpool, and Benfica, as the team struggles to field a fully fit squad.
Cole Palmer will not feature for Chelsea in their upcoming matches against Brighton and Liverpool.
