88-Year-Old California Jewelry Store Owner Assaulted in Smash-and-Grab Robbery
Joe’s Jewelry Store Robbery Leaves 88-Year-Old Owner Hospitalized After Assault
A violent smash-and-grab robbery was caught on surveillance footage at a jewelry store in San Jose, where a group of masked thieves barged in during daylight hours, injuring the 88-year-old owner in the process.
The heist unfolded around 2:30 p.m. on a Friday at Kim Hung Jewelry. Witnesses report that an SUV crashed through the storefront window, prompting several suspects clad in black to rush inside wielding axes and hammers, smashing display cases and grabbing gold jewelry.
Inside the store, the elderly owner was seen trying to intervene as suspects approached him. One suspect shoved him to the ground, causing him to sustain injuries from broken glass. A friend’s account states the owner was later diagnosed with a stroke triggered by the assault.
The suspects, one armed with a gun, escaped the scene in multiple vehicles after a loud horn outside startled them. It is believed the robbery resulted in damages estimated between $50,000 and $100,000, though the value of stolen jewelry has not been disclosed.
According to authorities, no arrests have been made, and the suspects remain at large. The police are investigating the incident, and questions about increasing security measures for small businesses have been raised.
San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan expressed outrage over the violence, calling the attack on the elderly owner “appalling” and emphasizing the need for strict consequences for the perpetrators. During a community gathering on Sunday, local leaders and the victim’s family condemned the attack, highlighting its broader implications for neighborhood safety and respect for elders.
