Biden Picks Delaware for Presidential Library; Board Says No Budget Plans as Fundraising Starts
President Biden Plans to Build a Library in Delaware Without a Set Budget
Former President Joe Biden has decided to establish his presidential library in his home state of Delaware. However, the project’s new board has opted not to specify a budget, as efforts to secure donations continue.
The Joe and Jill Biden Foundation assembled a 13-member leadership team, including notable figures such as former Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and veteran adviser Steve Ricchetti, to oversee fundraising and development efforts. The aim is to preserve Biden’s four-year presidency.
Recently, the construction of Barack Obama’s $850 million presidential library and museum in Chicago has faced significant backlash, delays, and legal issues, highlighting the challenges such projects can encounter.
According to Democratic fundraiser Rufus Gifford, who is now chairing the library board, there is increasing awareness regarding the project’s costs. He indicated the team won’t set a budget or specific fundraising goal at this stage.
Sources suggest the library could cost several hundred million dollars—a figure comparable to past presidential libraries, which have seen rising expenses. For example, Obama’s center aimed for $1.6 billion in fundraising, while Clinton’s library cost approximately $165 million, and George W. Bush’s project aimed for $500 million.
While major donors traditionally contribute to these projects, Biden’s fundraising efforts may face difficulties due to political fragmentation and waning donor enthusiasm, especially after his abrupt end to a second term last year. Some donors remain hesitant, citing frustrations over Biden’s decision to end his campaign just before the 2024 election.
Looking ahead, Biden’s team envisions an immersive museum dedicated to his first term, also serving as a hub for education and policy events. The exact location within Delaware has yet to be determined.
Recently, Biden appeared in public over Labor Day weekend, despite health challenges—including a recent skin cancer surgery and an aggressive prostate cancer diagnosis announced in May, which has spread to his bones. Such health issues have sparked debate about transparency and concerns over his cognitive and physical condition.
