Legendary Actor Graham Greene Passes Away at 73

Graham Greene, renowned for his role in Dances With Wolves, has died at the age of 73 after a lengthy illness. The acclaimed Canadian First Nations actor passed away in a Toronto hospital, leaving behind a legacy of trailblazing work in film and television.

Born in 1952 on the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario, Greene was instrumental in opening doors for Indigenous actors in the entertainment industry. His career began with TV appearances, including “The Great Detective” in 1979, and transitioned to film with his debut in “Running Brave” in 1983. His breakout role as Kicking Bird in “Dances With Wolves” earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Throughout his career, Greene showcased his versatility with roles in major films such as “Maverick,” alongside Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster, “Die Hard With a Vengeance,” with Bruce Willis, and the “Twilight” saga’s “New Moon,” featuring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson. His television credits included “Murder, She Wrote,” “Northern Exposure,” and “Lonesome Dove: The Series.”

Most recently, he appeared in series like Disney+’s “Echo,” Paramount+’s “Tulsa King,” and “Sweet Summer Pow Wow.” Greene once expressed his desire to avoid being typecast, stating, “I tend to move along in my career and take roles that are unique and different.”

He was known for his broad range of characters, saying, “I’ve played gods, judges, lawyers, police officers, and detectives,” emphasizing his preference for diverse roles rather than being pigeonholed. When asked about future roles, he joked, “The one that pays the most money—that’s being honest.”

He is survived by his wife, Hilary Blackmore, and their daughter, Lilly Lazare-Greene.
