U.S. Consideres Comprehensive Sanctions on Russia Amid Ongoing Conflict
The Treasury Secretary has expressed that all measures are being evaluated in response to Russia’s continued aggression in Ukraine. Despite recent diplomatic talks about peace, President Vladimir Putin has escalated bombing campaigns, prompting discussions of potential sanctions.
In an interview at Washington, D.C.’s Martin’s Tavern, the official stated, “Everything’s on the table,” referring to possible new sanctions against Moscow. He criticized Putin’s actions since his meeting in Anchorage and subsequent conversations, noting an increase in military strikes instead of the promised de-escalation.
Following a high-profile meeting with President Trump in Anchorage, Putin has persisted with attacks on Ukraine, including missile strikes that killed at least 17 residents in Kyiv and injured many others, including children. Photos depict the devastation, showing destroyed buildings and mourning families.
Experts suggest Putin may be using diplomacy to buy more time for military objectives while avoiding secondary sanctions, showing a strategic delay despite negotiations.
The U.S. also maintains a cautious stance toward India, which recently agreed to tariffs on Russian oil exports, viewed as supporting Russia’s war effort. Bessent commented that India’s actions are complex, emphasizing its democratic values and close ties to Western nations, while criticizing its role in the ongoing conflict through the purchase of Russian resources.
He also noted stalled trade discussions between the U.S. and India, which influence tariff decisions. Despite tensions, he expressed confidence that ultimately, both nations will resolve these issues.
