Donald Trump Plans Actions to Harm Millions of Workers This Labor Day

Trump’s Agenda Threatens Worker Protections and Workplace Safety

Donald Trump, who was born into wealth, has never experienced the realities of working for someone outside his family, making him arguably the most disconnected president from ordinary workers in recent history. His administration has consistently pursued policies detrimental to labor rights and workplace safety.

After Labor Day, the Trump administration plans to implement 60 rule changes that could negatively impact millions of American workers. Notably, they are set to eliminate minimum wage and overtime protections for 3.7 million home healthcare workers—a move that reverses an Obama-era rule closing a loophole that previously left these workers unprotected. Public comments on this rollback are due by September 2.

Additionally, the Trump administration aims to weaken regulations concerning disabled workers, potentially allowing some to earn as little as $4 per hour. This move reverses a draft rule proposed during the Biden administration, which sought to prevent wage disparities for disabled workers nationwide. The rollback threatens to undermine essential workplace safety standards, including those for mining and construction, along with inspections and penalties for violations.

While discussions about workers’ rights often focus on unionization, it’s crucial to recognize that only about 6% of private sector workers are union members. The majority—around 94%—are not unionized but still deserve protections like fair wages and safe working conditions. Expanding our conversation beyond union rights to include issues such as healthcare access, fair compensation, and Social Security is vital for supporting all workers, regardless of union membership.

Trump’s policies threaten the fundamental rights of every worker, both unionized and non-unionized. His administration’s actions are aimed at weakening protections rather than strengthening them, creating significant risks to job security and workplace safety.

Having a pro-worker leader matters more than ever. The upcoming days will reveal just how critical strong leadership is for advocating workers’ rights and safety.
