Forgotten Socceroo Striker Signs with Czech Powerhouse Ahead of 2026 World Cup

  • Garang Kuol has signed with Sparta Prague
  • The 20-year-old aims to feature in the upcoming World Cup

Garang Kuol is set to revive his career after joining Czech club Sparta Prague from Newcastle United, a Premier League team. The move comes ahead of next year’s World Cup, giving Kuol a chance to showcase his talents on the international stage.

Having spent two challenging years in England, Kuol signed a long-term contract with Sparta Prague. His journey included a loan to Scottish club Hearts and a stint with Dutch side Volendam, which was relegated in 2024. Despite limited game time at Newcastle, he made an impression in the reserves, scoring five goals and assisting four times in 11 matches during the Premier League 2 season.

Kuol previously played in the 2022 World Cup for Australia at age 18, notably against France. Sparta Prague’s interim sporting director, Tomas Sivok, expressed confidence in Kuol’s potential, highlighting his pace, versatility, and bravery in one-on-one situations. Sivok emphasized the importance of allowing Kuol time to adapt as he develops further.

With the World Cup approaching in June, Kuol faces the challenge of earning a recall to the Socceroos under coach Tony Popovic. The club’s move signals a fresh start, aiming to get Kuol back into national contention. His last appearance for Australia was in 2023.

The transfer coincides with recent national team selections, including the recall of young talent Nestory Irankunda, who recently moved to Watford from Bayern Munich. This indicates a focus on nurturing emerging Australian players ahead of the 2026 tournament.
