Taylor Swift Inspires a New Generation of Traditional Wives
Taylor Swift’s Engagement Sparks Conservative Calls for a Marriage Revival
Taylor Swift is engaged. Some hope she will inspire a marriage resurgence.
The announcement of Taylor Swift’s engagement to NFL player Travis Kelce, made via an Instagram post that garnered over 17 million likes, quickly dominated online discussions. News outlets amplified the story, with trending searches on Google exceeding two million early that day.
However, right-wing circles responded differently. Leading conservatives expressed their hope that Swift’s personal milestone would bolster their agenda—encouraging more marriages and childbirths nationwide.
Ben Shapiro, co-founder of The Daily Wire, praised the engagement as a positive development, urging others to follow suit. Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, wished for Swift and Kelce to have many children and speculated that marriage might sway Swift toward more conservative views, joking she could transform from a “cat lady” to a supporter of political figures like JD Vance.
Anti-abortion activists also saw the news as a rallying point. Kristan Hawkins of Students for Life hoped Swift’s engagement would inspire young women to pursue marriage and family life. Similarly, Lila Rose from Live Action praised Swift’s embrace of traditional marriage, asserting it would influence many women to look up to her.
Sociologist Brad Wilcox predicted a rise in marriage rates following the announcement. This enthusiastic conservative response aligns with their broader push—particularly from the Trump administration and associated figures like Elon Musk—to reverse falling birth and marriage rates. Efforts include promoting traditional gender roles, emphasizing procreation, and endorsing policies to support these ideals.
Ironically, Swift’s personal views and career often challenge such traditional narratives. She publicly endorsed Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the last election, expressed skepticism about societal pressure on women to prioritize marriage and children, and has spoken out against double standards faced by women today. Her hit songs, like “Lavender Haze” and “Bejeweled,” specifically critique societal expectations around marriage and femininity, demonstrating that her worldview diverges from the nostalgia-driven, traditionalist vision her conservative admirers hope she advocates.
As one critic confirmed, even among her enormous wealth and fame, Swift can’t entirely escape the logic that women’s value is tied to their relationship status—a notion she often pushes back against in her music and actions.
