Illinois Gov. Pritzker Slams Trump Over National Guard Deployment to Chicago

Illinois Governor Criticizes Federal Plans for Military Deployment in Chicago

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has dismissed reports suggesting that the federal government might deploy the National Guard to Chicago to combat crime, stating there is no emergency situation warranting such action. He emphasized that Illinois has not received any requests for federal intervention and has made no official requests for assistance.

This development follows efforts by former President Donald Trump to increase law enforcement presence in Washington, D.C., in response to ongoing crime issues, with hundreds of federal agents and National Guard troops already deployed in the district.

Trump has indicated that Chicago could be next in line for a federal crackdown, with plans reportedly in motion to mobilize several thousand National Guard troops next month. However, Pritzker condemned this, asserting that federalizing the Illinois National Guard or deploying active military units within the state is unnecessary and unjustified.

He accused Trump of attempting to create a crisis for political gain and of abusing his power to distract from the impact of his policies on working families. The governor also pointed out that Illinois has made significant progress in reducing crime rates, including declines in violence in Chicago itself.

The state’s Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton echoed Pritzker’s stance, criticizing Trump’s alleged plans, calling them a move to incite chaos to bolster political power. She affirmed the state’s commitment to law reform and maintaining safety, emphasizing that crime in Chicago has been decreasing and no justification exists for federal military deployment.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, also a Democrat, warned that deploying the National Guard unlawfully could damage community trust and threaten the progress made in public safety, citing recent decreases in violence metrics. He stressed the importance of lawful, community-oriented policing strategies.
