Liverpool’s Title Challenge in Jeopardy Over Alexander Isak Pursuit

Liverpool may jeopardize their chances of winning the Premier League if they overly rely on securing Alexander Isak and fail to do so, warns former defender Jamie Carragher. He emphasizes the need for a backup plan, criticizing the team’s limited attacking options.

The club’s latest bid of £110 million for Isak was rejected by Newcastle, who are unwilling to sell. Carragher considers a higher offer of £130 million excessive, and he criticizes Isak’s recent refusal to play for Newcastle, questioning his achievements on Tyneside and suggesting they have been exaggerated. Carragher also criticized Isak’s durability and scoring consistency, highlighting that he has not started 36 league matches and relies heavily on penalties.

Despite Liverpool’s strong start with a 4-2 victory over Bournemouth, Carragher fears Arne Slot’s squad lacks sufficient top-tier attacking players, with only Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, and Hugo Ekitike currently in the lineup. He stresses the importance of adding at least one more elite forward, especially with Salah’s upcoming absence for Africa Cup of Nations duties.

He states, “Slot will not defend the crown with only three out-and-out attackers. Liverpool needs at least two top-class operators to shoulder the goal-scoring burden.” Carragher also deems the current bid for Isak too low and suggests that paying over £130 million would be akin to buying Kylian Mbappe, which he considers unjustifiable.

Furthermore, Carragher condemns Isak’s refusal to join Liverpool, asserting that a professional athlete earning thousands a week should honor their contract. Newcastle remains firm, preferring to sign additional quality players before selling Isak, who missed the season opener and has not trained with his team since. The club’s rejection of Newcastle’s recent bid for Yoane Wissa illustrates their reluctance to part with Isak.
