Neymar in Tears as Ex-Liverpool Star Destroys Brazil, Admits Shame

Neymar Tears Up After Heavy Defeat in Return to Santos

Brazilian football legend Neymar was visibly emotional after experiencing the worst loss of his career on Sunday night. The 33-year-old, who recently rejoined his childhood club Santos, was overwhelmed following a 6-0 defeat to Vasco da Gama, where former Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho scored twice for Vasco.

Returning to Santos earlier this year after an 18-month stint at Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal marred by injuries, Neymar has scored six goals and provided three assists in 19 appearances so far. Despite this, Santos languish in 15th place in Brazil’s top division, only two points above the relegation zone.

The heavy defeat marked a career low for Neymar, and he was seen crying as he headed toward the tunnel after the match, wiping away tears with his shirt. This was his worst result since September 2015, when Barcelona suffered a 4-1 loss to Celta Vigo.

After the game, Neymar expressed his disappointment and shame, saying, “I’m ashamed. I’m totally disappointed with our performance. The fans have every right to protest — without violence, of course — but they can express their feelings.” He further added, “These tears came from anger and disappointment. I’ve never felt this before. It’s a total mess, that’s the reality.”

The club responded swiftly by firing head coach Cleber Xavier in an effort to turn their season around. Neymar, Brazil’s all-time top scorer, initially returned to Santos on a short-term deal with hopes of maintaining top form ahead of the 2026 World Cup, later extending his contract until the end of the year.

Supporting a Return to Roots

Club president Marcelo Teixeira highlighted the benefits of Neymar’s return, noting increased commercial activity and social media engagement. Neymar has spoken publicly about his happiness to be back, describing Santos as his home and his roots, emphasizing his deep connection with the club. He expressed hope for a bright future, saying, “I want to fulfill the remaining dreams of my career here, where it all began.”

Santos now sit just two points above Vasco and will look to bounce back in their upcoming match against Bahia.
