Putin Agrees to NATO-Style US Security Guarantees for Ukraine at Alaska Summit
Russia Signs Agreement to Offer Ukraine NATO-Style Security Guarantees
Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to allow the US and European nations to provide Ukraine with security assurances similar to NATO’s collective defense, as part of efforts to end the ongoing conflict. This development was announced by President Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, who indicated that during a recent summit, Russia consented to this significant concession, which had not been previously disclosed.
The proposed arrangement involves countries, including the US and its allies, committing to defend Ukraine if it is attacked in the future. This aligns with NATO’s Article 5, which stipulates that an attack on one member is an attack on all, prompting collective military support.
Putin has long voiced objections to Ukraine’s ambitions to join NATO and the EU, which Moscow views as threats. The proposed security guarantees are seen as a crucial component of the peace deal Trump aims to forge. Notably, Putin suggested that China, an ally of Russia, could also serve as a security guarantor.
During the meeting, Putin expressed a desire for Ukraine to relinquish control of the rest of the Donetsk region, an area rich in minerals and largely Russian-speaking. Russia has already seized about three-quarters of Donetsk but faces stiff resistance from Ukraine’s fortified defenses.
In return, Russia offered to freeze its advances in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, where progress has been minimal recently. Experts caution that ceding Donetsk could enable Russian forces to push further into Ukraine later on.
While Witkoff did not confirm if this territorial deal was discussed with Trump, he emphasized that the US president cannot make land concessions on behalf of Ukraine, highlighting the country’s sovereignty.
Despite unresolved issues, Trump described the Alaska summit as progress, though specific details remain undisclosed. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is scheduled to meet with Trump at the White House soon to discuss further developments.
