Diogo Jota’s Widow Saddened by Wolves’ Tributes to Liverpool Star

Tributes Pour in for Diogo Jota at Wolves Match

Wolverhampton Wanderers honored former player Diogo Jota in a heartfelt tribute before their match against Manchester City. Fans gathered at Molineux for a moving display, including a large banner dedicated to him, as his widow Rute Cardoso and family watched from the stands.

Jota, along with his brother Andre Silva, tragically died in a car accident in Spain on July 3. Wolves made sure to pay their respects with a minute’s silence, a tribute in the match programme, and featuring Jota on the front cover. A large tifo was unveiled, and a banner read: “We’ll remember you when you walk in fields of gold,” referencing his favorite song, “Fields of Gold” by Sting.

Jota’s parents, Isabel and Joaquim Silva, appeared moved during the ceremony. His wife, Cardoso, was also visibly emotional, supported by fellow players and fans. The club’s players lined up for a moment of applause, with goalkeeper Jose Sa appearing emotional. Molineux fans celebrated his number 20 shirt with applause during the 18th minute.

Jota, who joined Wolves initially on loan from Atletico Madrid in 2017, scored 44 goals in 131 appearances, helping the club gain promotion and reach European competitions. He became a club legend, setting records with his goal-scoring and earning a £41 million transfer to Liverpool in 2020, where he contributed to winning the Premier League.

Throughout the weekend, clubs and fans paid their respects, including Liverpool, who displayed a mosaic at Anfield and dedicated their match programme to Jota. Goalscorer Mohamed Salah, who scored twice in Liverpool’s 4-2 victory over Bournemouth, held back tears as he celebrated. The ‘Forever 20’ emblem was worn by Liverpool players in his memory, and fans created murals and banners honoring his legacy.
