Trump Eyes DC Homeless Raids Tonight, Sources Say
Planned Citywide Raids on Homeless Encampments in Washington, DC
The Trump administration is set to conduct sweeping operations against homeless encampments across Washington, DC starting tonight. City officials and advocacy groups, who have been briefed on the plans, are rushing to assist homeless individuals in vacating their tents to prevent detention or arrest.
According to Jesse Rabinowitz, Communications Director at the National Homelessness Law Center, arrests are expected to be carried out during nighttime hours to avoid media coverage. “We are doing our best to protect our clients and ensure that these actions adhere to legal standards,” he stated.
This crackdown follows President Donald Trump’s recent social media call for homeless individuals to “move out, IMMEDIATELY.” The operation will target up to 62 locations, including areas on land not controlled by the federal government, such as frontages of churches and businesses. It remains uncertain whether local police, federal law enforcement, or the National Guard will lead the efforts, as authorities have not responded to inquiries.
Advocates highlight a critical issue: the limited shelter capacity in DC. Currently, there are only around 40 shelter beds available, while nearly 900 people are estimated to need housing. This disparity underscores the challenges in providing adequate support for the homeless community during enforcement actions.
“Our priority is to safeguard our clients and ensure enforcement follows the law,” said Amber Harding, Executive Director of the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless.
