Michael Goodwin: Mamdani’s NYC Tour Attacking Trump Sparks Amateur Hour

New York Candidate Shifts Focus to Trump’s Presidency in Campaign

Earlier this year, Zohran Mamdani campaigned on addressing New York City’s affordability crisis by proposing higher taxes on the wealthy to fund free city programs. However, his campaign has now pivoted toward a confrontational stance against President Trump, positioning himself as a vocal opponent.

This week, the 33-year-old assemblyman is touring the five boroughs, claiming that Trump’s policies threaten the city and emphasizing the need for Mamdani’s election to resist his influence. He accuses Trump of actions such as cutting Medicaid for over a million New Yorkers, reducing funding for food assistance and housing, and fostering harmful relationships with current political figures like former Governor Andrew Cuomo, Mayor Eric Adams, and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa.

Mamdani’s strategy involves linking his rivals to Trump in an attempt to discredit them, asserting that they are too close to the president. While critics argue that overstating these connections is unpersuasive and overly partisan, Mamdani sees this as a way to energize voters against Trump’s agenda.

Political Risks of Anti-Trump Rhetoric

Many see this approach as a miscalculation. Dismissing federal cooperation, especially over partisan differences, can harm vital city services that depend on federal aid—such as housing, transportation, healthcare, and law enforcement. Mamdani’s combative stance risks alienating the federal government, which historically has been necessary for city-wide support in crisis situations.

Trump has previously criticized Mamdani personally, calling him a “communist lunatic,” while some media describe him as a democratic socialist. Despite differing descriptors, Mamdani’s radical positions and calls for policies like defunding the police contrast sharply with the generally low crime rates currently seen in New York, which are unlikely to benefit from federal intervention based on hostility instead of cooperation.

Economic and Policy Divergences

Mamdani’s push for higher taxes is also at odds with major Democratic figures like Governor Hochul, who acknowledge the high tax burden has driven residents out of the state. Meanwhile, recent federal tax reforms, such as the increase in SALT deductions, benefit high-income families and are rarely acknowledged by Democratic leadership, despite their potential advantages for New Yorkers.

Ultimately, his focus on attacking Trump rather than addressing local issues may hinder his prospects, as recent polls indicate that voters are increasingly receptive to policies like tax cuts—something Trump’s recent efforts have demonstrated and that Democrats continue to oppose, fearing political backlash.
