Wolves Honor Diogo Jota and His Brother Andre Silva Before Match Against Celta Vigo
The Wolverhampton Wanderers paid a heartfelt tribute to former player Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, before their pre-season friendly match against Celta Vigo at Molineux Stadium.
Jota and his brother tragically died in a car accident in Spain on July 3. In recognition of their memory, Wolves held a minute’s silence prior to the game, and floral wreaths were laid on the pitch to honor them.
Diogo Jota first joined Wolves on loan in 2017, later making a permanent transfer. He was integral to the club’s successful 2017-18 Championship title-winning campaign and went on to compete in the Premier League before transferring to Liverpool.
During his time at Wolves, Jota appeared 131 times, netting 44 goals and providing 19 assists. Fans and the club are planning additional tributes ahead of Wolves’ season opener at home against Manchester City next weekend.
Wolves paid an emotional tribute to their former player Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva.
Floral tributes have been left to honor Jota, who died last month at age 28.
Jota initially joined Wolves on loan in 2017 and signed permanently the following year.
Many floral tributes were left outside Molineux Stadium in memory of Jota and Andre Silva.
A special display featuring a tifo and fan mosaics was arranged in the South Bank section of Molineux. Additionally, Jota’s favorite song, “Fields of Gold” by Sting, played over the stadium speakers just before kickoff, and a commemorative 100-page program was issued for the match.
Jota was inducted into Wolves’ hall of fame, and some floral tributes are set to be displayed permanently at the Wolves Museum in his honor.
The match concluded with Celta Vigo winning 1-0, thanks to a goal from Pablo Duran.
