LA County Fire Captain Fakes Injury to Claim $25K Insurance Payout
Los Angeles Fire Captain Accused of Insurance Fraud by Faking Injury
A former Los Angeles County Fire Department captain has been charged with falsely claiming a work-related injury to receive over $25,000 in disability benefits. Prosecutors allege that Thomas Merryman, 45, fabricated reports and forged medical and personnel documents to fraudulently obtain the payouts.
According to officials, Merryman, who resides in Georgetown, Texas, exaggerated injury claims while not even being on duty at the time. Investigators found he manipulated paperwork by forging the signatures of colleagues and medical professionals to secure long-term disability payments from Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company.
Records show Merryman earned more than $291,000 in salary and benefits in 2024, which included a $153,714 salary, $112,687 in benefits, plus additional overtime. Despite retired in March, it remains unclear when he filed the fraudulent claim.
In response, District Attorney Nathan Hochman emphasized the department’s zero-tolerance policy for such conduct, especially among first responders. “Fake disability claims undermine insurance systems, drive up premiums, and harm those with legitimate injuries,” Hochman said. “We are monitoring officials who abuse the system.”
Merryman faces multiple charges, including insurance fraud, false impersonation, and forgery, which could result in up to five years in prison if convicted. His arraignment is scheduled for September 9.
