Phil Foden Reveals Man City Needed £300M Overhaul After Summer Spending Spree

Phil Foden Highlights Need for Manchester City’s Squad Overhaul

Phil Foden has recognized that Manchester City required a significant squad rebuild, embarking on a £300 million overhaul as they aim to rebound from last season’s disappointing performance. Under the guidance of Pep Guardiola, City have been active in the transfer market, bringing in ten new players during the summer and January windows, notably midfielders Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders.

Foden, who showed form during the Club World Cup with a remarkable goal, is eager to lead City’s revival and decrease the gap from last season’s third-place finish, 13 points behind Liverpool. With veterans like Kyle Walker and Kevin De Bruyne leaving at the season’s end, Foden and others are expected to assume greater responsibility within the team.

He emphasized the importance of refreshing the squad: “Any club needs to add new players and bring fresh energy. The recent transfer window has allowed us to do that, and I believe the new signings are of a very high caliber and integrate well into the team.”

Foden also expressed his personal ambitions, aiming to return to his peak and replicate his previous Player of the Year form, while acknowledging the need to adapt to the team’s evolving lineup.

While one of their winter signings, Vitor Reis, is heading to Girona on a season-long loan, City is expected to make additional departures before the end of August. Meanwhile, Guardiola’s squad was training with 26 players, preparing for their upcoming friendly in Palermo.

Foden highlighted the importance of healthy competition within the squad and the collective goal to improve after last season’s setbacks, confident that the new signings and team efforts will propel them back to success.

Foden expressed his desire to develop further, noting, “It’s not about copying what Kevin De Bruyne did, but about doing my best to reach that level again.”
