NJ cop threatened to k:i:ll himself months before murder-suicide: victim’s sisters
Tragic Murder-Suicide Linked to Prior Mental Health Concerns
A heartfelt tribute to Lauren Semanchik, a beloved veterinarian, was overshadowed by a tragic incident involving her former boyfriend, a New Jersey police officer. Just months before the deadly events, Santos reached out to a female colleague, reportedly signaling distress and raising concerns about his mental state.
This contact allegedly led to Santos undergoing a mental health evaluation in May, following his erratic behavior and threats to harm himself and others. Despite this, his sisters believe the police failed to identify ongoing mental health issues, which could have prevented the tragedy.
The day after Semanchik contacted the colleague, Santos’s behavior intensified. She suspected him of vandalizing her car outside her workplace, prompting her to file a police report. She also attempted to obtain a restraining order, but was told help was unavailable at that time. Her sisters expressed frustration over perceived negligence in managing Santos’s mental health.
On Friday night, Santos shot Semanchik and her new partner, Tyler Webb, before taking his own life. The two women’s father discovered Semanchik’s body the following day, while Santos’s body was found in his car approximately 50 miles away.
Authorities’ Response and Ongoing Investigation
Officials from the New Jersey State Police and Attorney General’s Office have not confirmed whether Santos underwent a mental health checkup. The Attorney General’s Office indicated that they are withholding comment until the local prosecutors complete their investigation.
Semanchik’s sisters described her as cautious about pressing for a restraining order, given Santos’s police status, and was hopeful he would leave her alone. Her family members remembered her as an animal lover who was deeply cherished by friends and colleagues.
