Howard Stern’s SiriusXM Future in Jeopardy as $500M Contract Nears End
Howard Stern’s Future at SiriusXM Uncertain as Contract Ends
Legendary radio personality Howard Stern is contemplating his next move as his five-year, $500 million contract with SiriusXM approaches its conclusion. At 71 years old, Stern is open to signing a short-term deal if the terms are favorable, but he is also considering retiring from the platform entirely.
Sources reveal that Stern is dissatisfied with SiriusXM’s current direction, particularly criticizing the company’s reliance on rival radio star Andy Cohen. One insider suggests Stern might accept a one- to two-year extension if negotiations meet his financial expectations, emphasizing he doesn’t want to lay off his staff.
While off during the summer, Stern has recently talked about the possibility of retiring, even suggesting he might “maybe should retire.” Frustration with SiriusXM’s management choices appears to have increased, prompting him to consider parting ways with the service.
Stern returned to SiriusXM in 2006 with his second stint of “The Howard Stern Show,” maintaining a significant presence on the platform. Over the years, his reputation has shifted—once regarded as a dominant, fearless interviewer, he has struggled to define his current persona, balancing claims of being “woke” with interviews featuring prominent political figures like Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Despite earlier leanings toward the Republican side, his political stance seems more fluid now.
Unlike in the past, Stern now rarely records from studios and prefers working remotely, citing COVID-19 concerns. His show’s audience has significantly diminished from a peak of 20 million daily listeners to roughly 125,000 recently, indicating a major decline in popularity compared to competitors like Cohen’s channels.
