Cat Mom Blames Blue Angels for Terrorizing Dying 14-Year-Old Cat
Seattle Cat Owner Sues Blue Angels Over Noise That Contributed to Her Cat’s Death
A woman from Seattle has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels, claiming their loud practice flights interfered with her elderly cat’s peaceful passing. The plaintiff, Lauren Ann Lombardi, alleges that the frequent sonic booms caused her 14-year-old cat, Layla, to suffer additional stress during her final days, which was worsened by the Blue Angels’ practice routines for the annual Seafair Air Show.
Layla, who battled heart disease, died on August 11, 2024. Lombardi describes her bond with the feline as that of a parent to a daughter. She recalls that the loud overhead flights, which lasted several minutes multiple times daily, resembled “being in a war zone” and caused the house to shake, terrifying the aging cat.
The lawsuit emphasizes that after Lombardi criticized the Blue Angels on Instagram, the team blocked her account. Lombardi claims this censorship violated her First Amendment rights. She expressed her frustration publicly, telling the squadron they were “terrorizing her cat and all the wildlife,” and tried to contact them directly but was blocked when she sent a message two days later.
Lombardi also recounts the emotional toll of Layla’s death, describing her as her “daughter” and sharing that she sheltered her during her final week to reduce her distress. Despite supporting the military, Lombardi criticizes the Blue Angels for their impact on her pet’s health, asserting that their sonic booms caused Layla’s distress during her last weeks.
She has requested the court to order the Blue Angels to unblock her social media accounts and cover her legal expenses. Lombardi hopes that her case will raise awareness about the harm caused by the sonic booms, although she recognizes that ending the tradition of the air show itself may be unlikely.
The lawsuit was prepared by her husband, attorney Nacim Bouchtia, who is also Layla’s owner. Lombardi continues to support military events but advocates for more consideration of animals’ well-being and free speech rights in the context of such demonstrations.
