Trump Backs Off Threat to Punish Musk’s Companies as Feud Eases
President Trump Expresses Support for Elon Musk’s Business Success
President Trump announced that he has no plans to withdraw federal funding from Elon Musk’s companies, emphasizing his desire for these businesses to flourish. He stated, “Everyone claims I will dismantle Elon’s companies by removing subsidies, but that’s not my goal.” He added, “I want Elon and all American businesses to prosper more than ever before, as their success benefits the nation.”
Trump also highlighted ongoing collaborations, such as SpaceX’s contracts with the Department of Defense. Despite earlier discussions of possible cuts, recent reports suggest the contracts remain vital. In June, he ordered reviews of space contracts, but the value of these agreements led to their continuation.
Among Musk’s holdings are SpaceX, Tesla, X (formerly Twitter), Neuralink, and The Boring Company. The federal government has long been a partner, funding SpaceX with billions for space missions and satellite technology. For instance, in April alone, SpaceX secured nearly $6 billion in Pentagon contracts, with its Starlink internet services supporting various agencies. To date, SpaceX has received over $22 billion in government contracts.
Tesla has also benefited from federal and state incentives, such as regulatory credits for electric vehicle production, which the company has sold for substantial revenue. It is estimated Tesla earned around $11.4 billion from these credits.
The diplomatic tensions between Trump and Musk arose after Musk criticized a legislative bill, calling it an “abomination.” Since then, neither has been seen publicly together, but Trump has indicated he’s open to reconciliation, focusing instead on efforts to improve the country.
“Things like that happen. I don’t blame him. I was a bit disappointed,” Trump remarked. He emphasized his current priority: “My main goal now is to restore and elevate the country to unprecedented heights.”
