Democratic Strategy Targets Trump Over Epstein Files, Fraying Republican Support

One of the early advocates in the Democratic leadership, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, identified an opportunity in the MAGA movement’s demand for the release of Jeffrey Epstein files. He recognized that this issue could split Trump from his Republican allies and link Epstein to the broader corruption involving Trump and the GOP.

Jeffries’s approach proved effective. He succeeded in creating division among Republicans, leaving Trump vulnerable. Democrat Rep. Ro Khanna initially brought up the Epstein topic in early July, which Jeffries later embraced, uniting Democratic leaders in maintaining pressure on the Epstein matter.

This strategy has significantly impacted the House’s agenda, disrupting Republican plans and prompting Speaker Mike Johnson to call an early recess. It has also exposed limitations in Trump’s influence within his party, as some congressional Republicans distance themselves from him concerning this issue.

According to reports, Democrats’ focus on Epstein has caused a ripple effect, making some MAGA supporters realize Trump’s credibility is compromised. A senior Democratic aide noted that while Trump is often seen as Teflon, this particular controversy is penetrating that armor, enabling Democrats to attack his standing and sow chaos within the Republican ranks.

As a result of these efforts, House Republicans, under Johnson’s leadership, have opted to shut down the House to avoid debates or votes on Epstein, signaling a significant blow to Trump’s protection in Congress.
