Trump Tried to Turn His Feud with Musk Into Revenge, Mother Jones
Federal Contractors Under Scrutiny Amid Trump-Musk Feud
During public disputes between President Donald Trump and Elon Musk last month, the president’s aides reportedly initiated a covert review to potentially cancel Musk’s contracts with the federal government. Trump had previously threatened to terminate agreements with Musk, highlighting his willingness to escalate the confrontation into a potentially unlawful exercise of power.
However, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, officials ultimately determined that most SpaceX contracts were crucial to the operations of the Department of Defense and NASA. This decision underscores how significantly the federal government relies on Musk’s technologies. Nevertheless, the very process of reviewing these contracts raises concerns about the potential misuse of government authority against private entities, even ones associated with figures like Musk.
Commenting on the situation, a journalist noted, “In a democracy, government officials should not threaten to punish dissent by threatening to destroy the businesses of critics—whether they’re media outlets, legal firms, or defense contractors.” Throughout Trump’s presidency, there have been multiple instances of the administration leveraging federal powers against perceived enemies, including investigations into civil servants and attempts to fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.
While the review appears to have prevented Musk’s contracts from being canceled, the ongoing investigation may serve as a warning that additional actions might follow. Musk, who previously suggested Trump could be implicated in the Epstein files, has characterized the investigation as a “cover-up.”
Regardless of one’s opinion of Musk, the possibility of a sitting president using federal oversight as a weapon against political adversaries should be deeply concerning.
