West Ham and London Stadium Clash Over Women’s Super League Match Costs
Dispute Escalates Between West Ham and London Stadium Over Women’s Match Hosting Costs
Recent tensions have resurfaced between West Ham United and the operators of London Stadium regarding the expenses associated with hosting Women’s Super League (WSL) matches. The club’s women’s team has not played at the venue since a single fixture in 2019, sparking frustration among fans and concerns at the board level.
In the 2024-25 season, West Ham’s women’s side was the only team in the WSL of the 12 to not host any matches at larger stadiums shared with their men’s teams. Instead, they played their games at Victoria Road, home to Dagenham & Redbridge, which has a capacity of 6,000.
Sources indicate that attempts to bring the women’s team back to the London Stadium have led to a tense stand-off. Negotiations over the hiring fees have yet to reach a resolution, with both parties unable to agree on terms.
A London Stadium spokesperson stated, “While we support women’s football, we cannot subsidise these matches with taxpayer money. Our offer to host WSL games remains on the table, but it has not been accepted.”
Efforts to secure a fixture at the stadium have been met with resistance from the venue’s management, citing costs that are significantly higher than those for men’s Premier League matches. West Ham’s vice-chair, Baroness Brady, was directly questioned about potential fixtures in a 2023 letter from the club’s female players.
The club emphasizes its commitment to promoting women’s football and is eager to host matches at the London Stadium. However, they argue that the current charges requested by the stadium operators are excessive, hindering progress. West Ham has expressed hope for a fair agreement and plans to continue discussions after the WSL fixture schedule is announced on August 25.
