Two Dead in NYC Crash During Stolen, Boozy, and Dr:u:g-Loaded Car Ride

Car Crash on Manhattan Bridge Ends in Fatalities and Driver Arrest

A car currently believed to have been stolen sped across the Manhattan Bridge before losing control and causing a deadly crash early Saturday morning. The incident resulted in the deaths of two pedestrians and a subsequent collision with an NYPD van.

Just before 7:30 a.m., a blue Chevrolet Malibu collided with a man on a bicycle and an elderly woman sitting on a bench at Bowery and Canal Street. The male victim was in his 30s, and the woman, May Kwok, 63 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses said the driver then crashed into an empty NYPD van parked nearby, totaling it.

The suspected driver, who had celebrated her 23rd birthday the previous day, and her 22-year-old female passenger attempted to flee the scene on foot but were quickly detained by police. Blood-stained clothing and the vehicle’s contents, including pills, marijuana, and alcohol, indicated drug and alcohol use at the time of the crash. The car, with Wisconsin plates, had not been returned since it was rented from an enterprise in Staten Island, which had also alerted authorities.

Both women were transported to Bellevue Hospital for drug testing. As of now, they have not faced formal charges. The passenger, who had rented the car, was seen in handcuffs, her leggings bloodstained.

The male victim’s brother, Peter Kwok, expressed outrage, stating, “This is not a car accident. They committed a crime and tried to escape because of their recklessness,” emphasizing his desire for justice for his sister. The victims have not been publicly identified as the investigation continues.

The driver was depicted being carried into the police precinct, appearing limp and injured. The incident has deeply affected the local community, especially as the female victim was a well-known resident who often attended church and socialized in Chinatown.

Police are still collecting information, and authorities have indicated that they are working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the crash.
