Newcastle Withdraws from James Trafford Chase as Man City Shows Strong Interest
Newcastle Likely to Drop Interest in Burnley’s James Trafford as Manchester City Shows Renewed Interest
Newcastle United is considering stepping back from their long-standing pursuit of Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, with negotiations still unresolved. Although the possibility of a deal remains alive, the club now feels confident in their current goalkeeping options.
Despite their persistent interest spanning over a year, recent assessments suggest Newcastle may not push further if an agreement isn’t reached. Interestingly, Manchester City’s renewed interest, owing to a buy-back clause, adds complexity to the situation, although this has been a backdrop throughout the summer.
City, along with other clubs, has been monitoring Trafford, who is valued by Burnley above the current offer from Newcastle. Trafford, 22, joined City as a youth and was transferred to Burnley for £15 million in 2023 after eight years at City. He has since made 73 appearances across the Premier League and Championship during his two seasons at Burnley.
Neither Newcastle nor Burnley have publicly commented on the negotiations, but it is clear that Newcastle’s confidence in acquiring Trafford has waned. The club’s focus appears to be shifting, and they may consider alternative targets should the deal fall through.
