Republicans Seek to Question Jill Biden Amid President’s Decline and Family Controversies
House Republicans Explore Calling Family Members of Former President Biden Over Cognitive Health
Congressional Republicans are considering summoning Jill Biden and other close family members of former President Joe Biden for questioning about his mental capacity during his presidency. This comes after Annie Tomasini, a key aide, became the third official to invoke the Fifth Amendment, refusing to answer questions that could incriminate her.
House Oversight Chairman James Comer expressed concern over a pattern of Biden associates shielding themselves from potential criminal liability, suggesting efforts to conceal information about the president’s health and family dealings. Tomasini declined to comment on whether the White House instructed her to lie about Biden’s mental state and also refused to answer questions regarding her advice on classified documents and alleged conspiracy with White House officials.
Comer indicated a likelihood that Jill Biden herself could be called to testify, especially after her former chief of staff Anthony Bernal also invoked the Fifth Amendment during a recent deposition. The investigation aims to uncover whether President Biden’s aides manipulated medical and legal matters, including the use of a presidential autopen to potentially issue pardons for family members.
Lawmakers are also probing the use of the autopen device, which was confirmed to have granted pardons preemptively to Biden family members. Former White House chief of staff Jeff Zients had approved such pardons, and several other aides are scheduled for voluntary interviews, including ex-White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, who recently changed her political affiliation to independent.
Additional interviews are set with Ian Sams, Andrew Bates, and Ron Klain, among others, as the investigation intensifies. Comer stated, “We’re bringing in everyone involved—starting from the lower-level staff to those who may have directed the use of the autopen,” emphasizing the ongoing effort to uncover potential misconduct surrounding Biden’s presidency.
