Delta Flight to Detroit Diverted After Passenger Attempts to Open Exit Door
Passenger Disrupts Flight, Forcing Emergency Landing
A Delta Air Lines flight was diverted to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, following an incident involving a disruptive passenger attempting to open an emergency exit door mid-flight. The flight, operated by SkyWest Airlines and traveling from Omaha to Detroit, was about a third of its route when the passenger made the attempt.
According to air traffic recordings, the pilot contacted the control tower around 7 p.m. to report that the individual was fighting with a flight attendant and trying to open the exit door. Passengers and crew preemptively intervened, stopping the passenger from accessing the emergency exit. The plane safely landed, and law enforcement was waiting upon arrival.
Video footage shows officers removing a man in a white T-shirt, handcuffed, from the aircraft. The individual was not identified, and authorities have not announced any charges. A mugshot indicates the suspect is Mario Nikprelaj, 23, who was later detained at Linn County Jail.
In a statement, SkyWest Airlines emphasized their strict stance: “SkyWest has zero tolerance for unruly behavior as safety for our customers and crew is our top priority.”
The incident underscores the importance of maintaining calm and order during flights to ensure everyone’s safety.
