Zelensky Draws Parallels Between Himself and Trump

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has highlighted similarities between himself and former U.S. President Donald Trump, emphasizing shared values and approaches to leadership. In an interview, Zelensky stated that both leaders are representatives of their people and share core principles such as defending freedom, family, and national sovereignty.

He remarked, “I believe every American would defend their family with arms, just as Ukrainians see defending their homeland.” Zelensky noted that the normal routines of Ukrainian life have been disrupted since Russia’s invasion in 2022, but he maintains that shared values underpin international support for Ukraine.

Despite their different backgrounds—Zelensky was a political outsider who previously succeeded in entertainment and business—the Ukrainian leader said he adopts a non-linear, decisive approach reminiscent of Trump’s style. “Coming from business, I make quick decisions,” he explained, emphasizing that Ukraine’s wartime strategy has been similarly agile.

Zelensky has cultivated a ‘business-like’ defense industry, notably increasing private sector involvement in drone manufacturing, which now accounts for 70% of Ukraine’s defense production. “When we started, there was almost no private sector engagement,” he said, “but now, we work outside bureaucratic constraints.” This approach reflects his belief that flexible decision-making is crucial in modern conflict.
