NYC Photographer Captures Stunning Lightning Strike at One World Trade
Lightning Strikes One World Trade Center During Storm
A photographer recently captured a striking image of lightning zapping the summit of One World Trade Center amid a heavy thunderstorm. Interestingly, this is not the first occurrence of such an event.
Max Guliani, 34, was alerted by the sound of thunder while preparing at his home. He quickly headed to his favorite vantage point—a pier along the Hudson River—and aimed his smartphone at the iconic 1,776-foot skyscraper as a storm rolled through Manhattan.
He documented a series of dramatic lightning strikes, including a direct hit on the antenna atop the tower. The storm waters below saw boats bobbing and rocking under the storm’s fury.
Guliani mentioned that in Florida, such lightning activity is common year-round, but in New York, it usually only occurs during hot days when temperatures hit close to 90°F. This rarity adds to his excitement in capturing the moment.
He also shared that he has a friendly rivalry with friends who chase storms across New York, competing to take the best lightning photographs.
Guliani prefers staying sheltered on the pier, enjoying the thrill of witnessing nature’s power from a safe distance, especially with a clear view of Manhattan’s skyline during such storms.
As a major lightning magnet, One World Trade Center has recorded 189 strikes between 2015 and 2020. Chicago’s Willis Tower is even more frequently struck, with about 250 lightning hits during the same period.
