Mayor Adams Secures Major Endorsements in Long-S:ho:t Re-Election Bid

Law Enforcement Unions Endorse Eric Adams for Re-election

A broad coalition of law enforcement unions is set to officially endorse Mayor Eric Adams’s re-election bid this week, marking a significant early victory in his campaign for a second term. The newly formed group, called the NYC Uniformed Forces Coalition 2025, includes nearly all city police, corrections, and sanitation unions. The endorsement will be announced on the steps of City Hall.

However, the Police Benevolent Association (PBA), the largest police union nationally and a supporter of Adams in 2021, is notably absent from this endorsement. The PBA attended the initial coalition meeting but later chose to endorse independently.

The unions’ support comes despite the recent primary election results, where insurgent candidate Zohran Mamdani, a socialist lawmaker backed by labor and business interests, defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo’s chosen candidate. Cuomo’s campaign, supported by many labor groups, had initially been seen as a frontrunner.

In the wake of the primary, Adams and Cuomo, both running as independents, have been vying for the support of influential city figures, urging each other to withdraw to consolidate opposition against Mamdani.

Police sources indicate that many officers are skeptical of Cuomo, criticizing his role in passing controversial criminal justice reforms in 2019 and expressing concern over Mamdani’s leftist stance, particularly his calls to defund the police.

Adams’s campaign praised the unions’ backing, highlighting their confidence in his record and commitment to public safety. Todd Shapiro, the mayor’s spokesman, emphasized that the city can prioritize both safety and justice simultaneously.

This police support might help Adams recover from recent polling shortcomings, where he trails the leading candidates by more than 20 percentage points. Meanwhile, Mamdani faces criticism over his centrist remarks and consideration of retaining Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, which some see as a move to moderate his leftist image.
