Florida Mom Irena Green Jailed Over Brown Grass & Dirty Mailbox

Florida Homeowner Arrested Amid Dispute with Homeowners’ Association

A resident in Florida was detained without bond after her ongoing conflict with her homeowners’ association (HOA) escalated to the point of an arrest warrant being issued. The dispute centered around minor property violations and lawn maintenance issues.

Irena Green explained that the trouble began last year when she received a notice about her front yard’s grass appearing brown and dying, which she attributed to a large tree and a drought that led the county to impose watering restrictions.

Despite her efforts, Green said she continued to receive notices for minor issues such as dents in her garage, a dirty mailbox, and parking a commercial cargo van without logos—despite other residents owning similar vans. When she failed to respond, the HOA filed a lawsuit demanding compliance with their directives.

Green represented herself in court, presenting explanations and photographs, but her defense was dismissed. A judge ordered her to fix her lawn and sell her van within 30 days. She complied, but missed a subsequent court date, claiming she was never personally served notice to appear.

During a routine traffic stop on May 23, Green was handcuffed and taken to the Orient Road Jail, where she learned no bond had been set. She described her detention as living “like a criminal” for what she views as a trivial violation. The incident left her feeling devastated, especially considering her efforts to improve her living environment for her family.

Legal proceedings continued when Green’s sister-in-law filed for an emergency hearing, and the court scheduled her next appearance for August 19, 2024. Meanwhile, she faced charges of contempt of court at the judge’s directive, with the warrant reportedly issued at the HOA attorney’s request.

Green expressed her frustration over the experience, emphasizing her hard work to provide a better life for her children and condemning her treatment for what she perceives as minor infractions.
