SC Teacher Nicole Ballew Callaham Released on Bail
South Carolina Teacher Released on Bail Amid Allegations of Sexual Abuse
A teacher accused of engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a minor appeared in court smiling as she was granted bail. Nicole Ballew Callaham, 33, faces three felony charges related to sexual conduct with a minor, stemming from an alleged affair beginning when the victim was just 14 years old.
Callaham surrendered to authorities in Anderson County last week, amid ongoing investigations. Court documents reveal that the relationship lasted for about two years, during which she reportedly signed the student out of school, transported him to practices, and supervised after-school activities. The victim, now 18, came forward after processing the trauma, stating her intention to encourage others to speak out against abuse.
At a recent hearing, her lawyer requested her release on bond after disclosing that Callaham is pregnant, though the identity of the father remains unknown. She was released after posting a $120,000 cash bond, with a court order restraining her from contact with the victim or certain locations.
During the proceedings, a search warrant and cooperation from the victim’s family supported the allegations of a persistent pattern of misconduct. The victim’s mother recounted that the teacher first met her son while involved in a school play, noting that Callaham saw him as an easily manipulated young individual.
In court, the victim expressed resolve, emphasizing the importance of awareness and speaking out, stating, “I’m here to fight and I’m not going to back down.”
Law enforcement officials continue to investigate, and the case has sparked discussions about the need for vigilance and protective measures in school environments.
