Billy Horschel, widely loved in the golf community, was among those who recognized Rory McIlroy’s exceptional talent early in his career. Despite being slightly older, Horschel has followed McIlroy’s journey and achievements closely.

While Horschel has claimed significant victories, he’s yet to secure a major title, unlike McIlroy, who had won four majors by age 24 and added The Masters to his accomplishments in 2025. McIlroy’s early success highlights his remarkable talent and mental strength.

Horschel’s Perspective on McIlroy’s Growth as a Golfer and Person

During a recent podcast, Horschel reflected on his experiences with McIlroy growing up and in professional tournaments. He recalls seeing McIlroy as a teenage amateur, noting, “He was really good, full of talent and confidence even at 17. We weren’t very aware of him in the U.S. because he hadn’t played much here yet.”

Horschel admitted to sometimes being overly competitive and boisterous, even trying to emulate a pest-like persona on the course. Despite this, he has always held great respect for McIlroy, emphasizing their evolving friendship over the years. “We now have a great relationship, and I think everyone involved never doubted Rory’s potential to achieve greatness.”

The rivalry persisted into recent years, such as the 2024 BMW Championship at Wentworth, where Horschel and McIlroy faced off in a playoff. Horschel’s clutch long putt secured his win, yet both players shared mutual respect, embracing afterward—a testament to their strong bond built over years of competition.

Horschel concludes that respect among golfers is often overlooked but essential, and his relationship with McIlroy exemplifies this camaraderie.
